Welcome to The Learning DM!

Hello, readers!  Thanks for visiting this new blog.  As you could likely tell from the title, the focus of this blog will be on running Dungeons & Dragons games from the Dungeon Master’s point of view.  The format of the typical post will include brief session recaps, but most importantly, what I learned from DMing that particular session.

A little background information about myself is in order.  I am in my mid 30s, married, with two sons, aged 9 and 16, who are both players in my campaign.  The other players are about my age, and range from zero to a few years of RPG experience.  My own experience with D&D began at ten years old, when a friend ran the original Ravenloft adventure with me on the playground.  Until I reached college age, D&D was a big part of my life.  Recently, I picked up the Ravenloft board game and the new Essentials Red Box set, and now I am right back in the thick of things as a DM again.

But, oh, how things have changed!  No longer do I have hours and hours to prepare and study heavy tomes about the details of each character class or minutiae about the campaign setting.  Instead, I have to think on my feet, and learn by experience.  Hopefully, by reflecting on what went right, and what went wrong, I will become a better DM.  And, perhaps, by reading these reflections, you can be a better DM as well.  The purpose is to make my campaign the best it can possibly be; I think this blog will be of great value in making that happen.

I just started a D&D blog too! In the short time its been up, I’ve already seen the value it presents by just giving me a place to blot down my thoughts on the previous nights adventure. Hindsight is 20/20 as they say, I always analyze a game after I’ve run it, but only with the blog did I start diligently writing it down. It’s amazing how much it helps.

I just noticed you’re listed as “Uncategorized”. I did that on my first couple posts too. On the left of your Dashboard, under Posts, is Categories. You’ll want to add some to categorize your posts with the community. Try adding the categories; D&D, Dungeons & Dragons, RolePlaying, DM Advice, etc.

Good luck with your game and blog! Looking forward to more!

Thanks so much for the category tips. That should make things much easier to find in the future. You are right, writing about my sessions seems to improve my game. It forces me to be reflective over what went right, and what went wrong.
